(a) Two ideal gases are placed in separate, identical steel boxes.
Each box has an identical pinhole through which the contained gas
may effuse. One gas is Xe, while the other gas is an unknown––but
elemental–– gas. The Xe totally effuses in 32.0 minutes, while the
unknown gas totally effuses in 23.5 minutes. What is a likely
identity for the unknown gas? Show your work.
(b) A quantity of the tryptamine alkaloid psilocin, whose molecular weight is 204.27 g mol–1, is vaporized with 2.00 mol of Ne at 450 oC in a 10.00 L container. The mixture exerts a total pressure of 14.05 atm. Assuming vaporized psilocin and Ne both behave as ideal gases, how many grams of psilocin was vaporized?
