Consider a system of four nonidentical spin 1/2 particles. Find the possible values of the total spin of this system and state explicitly the number of angular momentum eigenstates for each of the total spin values.
And Total number of eigenstates are:
= 2 * (number of states for s=0) + 3 * (number of states for s=1) + 1 * (number of states for s=2)
= 2 * 1 + 3 * 3 + 1 * 5
= 2 + 9 + 5
= 16
Note: If we take the basis as | s1 = 1/2, s2 = 1/2, s3 = 1/2, s4 = 1/2 >, then it is easy to see that the total number of states will be 24 = 16.
So everything is consistent.
