Calculate the empirical forumla of your compound. Set the formula in the form Ni(Cl)x(NH3)y where x and y are determined from their titration results.

From my titration results:

% mass of Ni+2= 25.8% (0.192mmol)

% mass of Cl- = 26.8% (0.315mmol)

% mass of NH3 = 45.4% (1.12mmol)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Element     Mass        Moles                  ratio          smallest fraction

Ni                25.8       25.8/58.71 = 0.439 0.439/0.439 = 1                           1

Cl                26.8      26.8/35.5 = 0.755     0.755/0.439 = 1.72                       2

NH3            45.4     45.4/17 = 2.67           2.67/0.439 = 6.08                         6

Therefore, the emperical formula is: [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2

Nickel can combine with carbon monoxide to form a compound that has the chemical formula Ni(CO)n, where n is a whole number. This compound is a gas at 75 C. In an effusion experiment at 75 C, 12.1 mL of this compound escapes through the pinhole in 10.0 minutes. Under the same conditions, 11.9 mL of carbon dioxide effuses in 5.0 minutes. Using this information, determine the chemical formula of the unknown compound.

An empirical formula is the lowest whole number ratio of the elements in a compound and provides information about the composition of a compound. For instance, the compound sodium sulfate decahydrate has the chemical formula Na2SO4•10H2O. This formula conveys the information that there are ten water molecules per two sodium ions per one sulfate ion. You might wonder: “How were these ratios determined?” To answer the question it is necessary to recognize that the ratio of atoms (or ions) is...
