1) A clown is using a mirror to apply his makeup before a show. When he sits with his face 30.0 cm from the mirror, the image he sees of his face is upright and two times larger ( m = +2.00 ). (a) What is the image location? (b) What is the focal length of the mirror? (c) Is the mirror convex or concave

Solutions

Expert Solution

Hey there!

The magnification of a lens can be given with the formula

where di is the distance between the image and the mirror and d0 is the distance between the object and the mirror.

Here the clown is 30 cm away from the mirror and gievn that m = +2.0

Hence the distance between the mirror and the object can be given as

Hence -d0 = 2 x 30 cm = -60 cm (virtual image)

Note that if the value of di is negative then the image appears behind the mirror (virtual image). In our case, the image appears behind the mirror by 60 cm as virtual image and the object is in front of the mirror by 30 cm. Hence we could say that the mirror is CONVEX.

The focal length of a lens can be given as

By substituting, we get,

I hope the solution helps... Feel free to comment and discuss further.. Cheers :)
