(A) car has a length of 6m and is travelling at speed of 95km/hr. What is its Reynolds number?(5s.f , tolerance +/-500)
(B) for Concorde SST plane, how far could it actually glide in km?(3s.f), (has lift/drag ratio of 6:2, engines failed at altitude of 17500m and can make it to airport 106km away)

Solutions

Expert Solution

(A) Reynold's number , Re= UL/v

    U= Speed of car in m/s = 95*0.27778 = 26.3891 m/s

    L = length of the car = 6 m

    v = kinematic viscosity of air = 1.5 * 10-5 m2/s

Re = 26.3891/ v = 1.759273 * 106

(B) lift to drag ratio = 3: 1 ( means every 3 miles it travels forward losses an altitude of 1 mile)

1 mile = 1.60934 Km

distance to airport = 106km

current altitude = 17.500 Km

Based on the ratio given, the flight need 21.955 times to loss its altitude for travelling to 106 Km. But at 10.8 altitude will become 0.

flight will glide until 53.856 Km, then it will loss the altitude completely

A train, travelling with velocity v = 0.8c, enters a tunnel. The train has proper length 100m and the tunnel has proper length 80m. When the center of the train coincides with the center of the tunnel, two gates located at either end of the tunnel come crashing down. The three events (the center of the train reaching the center of the tunnel, the front gate closing and the rear gate closing) occur simultaneously in the stationary reference frame. a)...

1 – Consider the car-caravan analogy. In this problem, assume a propagation speed of 70 km/hr and that each toll booth takes 6 seconds to service a car. Suppose the caravan of 10 cars begins immediately in front of the first toll booth, travels 50 km to a second toll booth, then another 50 km to a third toll booth, and finally stops immediately after the third tool booth. Thus, they travel a total of 100 km. What is the...
