Hi, please help me with this question.
What does flank wear depend on and why did a tool that machined steel 1020 suffered a flank wear greater than one of the same material that machined 4140 steel or aluminum?
What does crater wear depend on?
If you can give also some resources from which I can find information about the answer.
Thank you very much.
Flank wear depends on the cutting speed, feed, depth of cut. It also depends on the hardness of finished work surface, and hardness of the flank surface of the tool. It also depends on the thermal conductivity and thermal storage capacity of flank surface of the tool. The higher flank wear of tool while machining 1020 steel may be due to higher number of micro abrasives on its finished surface.
Crater wear depends on the hardness of chip flowing over the rake face of tool, hardness of tool surface, coefficient of friction between chip and tool surface, thermal properties of tool surface and bulk, diffusion of atoms from the chip to the rake surface.
