What do you understand by break down maintenance? Discuss the various features of breakdown maintenance management?
Breakdown maintenance is maintenance performed on equipment that has broken down and is unusable. It is based on a breakdown maintenance trigger.
It may be either planned or unplanned. An example of planned maintenance is run-to-failure maintenance, while examples of unplanned maintenance include corrective maintenance and reactive maintenance.
A common example of run to failure maintenance is the maintenance plan for a general-purpose light bulb. The bulb is allowed to run until it fails. At this time, the plan to fix the asset is carried out. A new light bulb is obtained from stocks and replaced at a convenient time.
it is adapted for inexpensive devices such as an ink jet printer used to print accounting data.
it is not suitable for expensive equipment since its lifetime is much reduced.
it is not suitable for equipment that needs to be precise in order to ensure quality of the finished product.
