The question is from the textbook Inequality, Discrimination, Poverty, and Mobility Question 2 from chapter 12:
"How responsible are people for their own poverty? What responsibility does the government have in the alleviation of poverty?"
people are somehow responsible for their own poverty. they do share some accusation for being poor. some people do not willingly work to earn. they just sit back and relax. they are poor by choice. they may be perfectly healthy and eligible to work but their unwillingness makes them poor. some people do not have enough qualification for a decent office job. even in developed countries we see a lot of unemployment due to lack of skills. some people are poor because of their standard of living. some people are poor just because they made some wrong decisions in their career or personal life.
but on the other hand govt is very much to be held responsible for its citizens poverty alleviation. govt is responsible for providing people with all basic public services, building of infrastructure, creating more employment and regulating the markets efficiently. the govt that fails to provide basic emenities like food, water, healthcare and education to its people gives rise to poverty. countries with poor infrastructure usually ends up with a high poverty rate. govt is also responsible for creating as many job opportunities as possible, for everyone. the more the people are employed, the less is the poverty. even effective fiscal and monetary policies play a vital role in the decision of the poverty of a country. govt that works to provide all basic facilities like hospitals, schools, markets and safe financial institutes experiences a decline in its poverty rates.Poverty is a problem everywhere in the world and governments play an important role in the fight against it. They can employ at least four different policies to reduce poverty: minimum wage laws, social security, negative income taxes, and in-kind benefits. social securities pay a major role in reduction of poverty across the globe. pension plans and other govt schemes in the benefit of people below the poverty line can help us reduce the alleviation of poverty.
