how are they come up with "like disslove like"? Is there any scientific explaination how it works?
Like dissolves like is just a phrase that scientists came up
with, it is more like basic rule that exists for
solvents. Polar compounds dissolve in polar compounds, non-polar
compounds dissolve in non-polar
solvents and non-polar compounds do not dissolve in polar or vice
versa. This was just a basic observation
made by studying the properties of solvent and solute. This phrase
holds true for all the cases mentioned
above. Examples for such interactions are
Salt and water (polar interaction) ; benzene - carbontetrachloride
(non-polar interaction)
Water - calcium carbonate ( they do not interact)
