What are the products of gametogenesis?
A. Females- 1 egg ; Males- 2 sperm
B. Females – 4 eggs ; Males- 4 sperm
C. Females- 4 eggs ; Males- 1 sperm
D. Females- 1 egg ; Males- 4 sperm
Answer- D. Females- 1 egg; Males- 4 sperms
Explanation- Gametogenesis refers to the production of gametes in testes and ovary. In males, the primordial germ cells in seminiferous tubules undergoes mitosis and produces type-A and type- B spermatogonia. This type -B spermatogonia undergoes division and form primary spermatocyte which is diploid. A primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis-I and forms two secondary spermatocyte. These two secondary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis-II and ultimately produces four (4) sperms.
Whereas in females, oogonia undergoes mitosis and forms primary oocyte. Both are diploid cell. Primary oocyte undergoes growth phase by the influence of FSH. Soon after primary oocyte undergoes meiosis-I and produces a secondary oocyte and a polar body. Both are haploid cell and unequal in size. The polar body is inactive. Through ovulation, this secondary oocyte comes out as egg.
Hence, option D is correct answer.
