Make sure you get what you need and you know what you need. Don’t get distracted by shiny objects and a pretty design, those aren’t going to help your website succeed.

If you want a website for your business then make sure your designer is going to focus on that goal rather than a shiny new trend. Many designer’s sole focus is this or even worse using a template which won’t help your business one bit.

Here are some basics that you should get when purchasing a website:

Should be responsive (that means it’ll work well on computers, tablets, and phones).
Should be secure (free security certificate, etc.)
Designers should be focused on the goal of the website first, design second.
Designers should ask a lot of questions. Especially if it’s a big project and you’re not sure of the needs.
Needs to be custom because templates won’t help you stand out and are often poorly coded.
Should at a minimum be technically optimized for search engines.
You will likely eventually need a blog, at least have that option even if you don’t create one right away.
