Describe the Sulfur cycle.

Describe the Sulfur cycle.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The process by which sulphur moves to and from rock, waterways and living system is the sulphur cycle.
It is a biogeochemical cycle which is important in Geology is it affect many minerals.
It is also important because sulphur is an essential element of many proteins and cofactors.

The steps involved in sulphur cycle are:-
1. Organic sulphur converts into an organic forms such as hydrogen sulphide elemental Sulphur and sulphide minerals by the process of mineralization.
2. Hydrogen sulphide, sulphide and elemental sulphur oxidises to form sulphate.
3. Sulphate then reduces to sulphide.
4. Sulphide incorporate into organic compounds.

Sources and sinks of sulphur:-
Minerals such as pyrite, amount of sulphur has been increasing through volcanic activity as well as weathering of The crust - these are the source.
And the main sulphur sink is the ocean.

Economic importance of sulphur cycle:-
It is involved in the production of fossil fuels, metal deposits as it acts as oxidising or reducing agent.
