Depression is one of the common mental disorders that most of the people are facing in today's life. Depresssion leads to mood swings, absense of happiness from one's life and sometimes it is so harmful that a person can commit suicide due to depression. It can affect anyone, at any age. Most of the people suffering from depression do not get proper medical care and the situation become worse for them.

People with depression feel sad, anxious, helpless, dejected and hopeless. They always show restlessness in their behaviour. We can explain the major causes of depression with the help of the following points-

  • People face depression due to biological reasons. when there is change in neurotransmitters, they are more or less in numbers, a person feel depressed.
  • Some people have negative personality. They take everything negatively present around them. These type of people have low self esteem and easily develop depression.
  • Gender also plays an important role in developing depression. Women are found more depressed than men. This could happen due to hormonal changes, like menstruation, pregnancy, menopause etc. Other reason could be that women take their work more seriously than men and suffer from depression.
  • Continuous use of medicines can also lead to depression.
  • Apart from these factors, there are situational reasons also like death of loved ones, divorce, low grades in exams, financial crisis etc give birth to depression.

Depression develops in the brain due to the less or more amount of chemicals. According to a study it was found that a part of the brain known as orbitofrontal cortex is affected by depression. This part helps a person to recognize self and contribute to feel low self esteem other negativities which lead to depression.

Treatment of Depression- Depression can be treated easily. The use of antidepressant medicines and many psychotherapies are the most common types of treatment for depression.Despite the availability of different medications and therapies, depression is not always curable. The treatment of depression depends from person to person.

Psychological treatment helps a lot to cope up with stress and to improve one's skills suffering from depression. The psychological therapies also help to stay away from negative behaviour and thoughts. A person can take several counselling sessions to reduce depression. Some major psychotherapies which can be given to the patients of depression are cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy, behaviour therapy etc. Despite these therapies, medication is also useful to cope up with depression. Treatment by antidepressant medication is really very helpful to reduce depression and anxiety.

These medicines are prescribed by the doctors along with the psychotherapies and also when psychotherapies are not enough to eliminate depression. When people suffer from severe depression, these antidepressant medication is prescribed by the doctors. Along with these psychotherapies and medications, a person can cope up with depression by changing his life style, behaviour, thoughts etc. Eating healthy food, exercising daily and a good sleep help to cope up with depression and to have a healthy and happy life.
