Using one or two sentences, compare and contrast resource partitioning and the competitive exclusion principle.
Describe in one sentence the concept of symbiosis, and define in two sentences the concepts of parasitism, commensalism and mutualism using a pair of organisms to exemplify each.
In two sentences, list the key characteristics of a predator and a prey using an example of an animal that exemplifies each. Describe in a short paragraph why a predator and prey can exhibit a cyclical relationship in terms of population oscillations.
Hi Answer:
1.Using one organism as an example, describe the difference between a fundamental niche and a realized niche in one or two sentences.
A fundamental niche is a place where a species can live without any fear such as predation, competition, or resource limitation. Fundamental niche is larger niche.
Realized niche is the place where species actually live and compete with various factors for their survival.
Example: Raccoons naturally live in forests and eats insects, fruits, and other small creatures. i.e. fundamental niche. When human beings interfere with forest and destroy their natural habitat they come to the urban area and start live on thrash and waste products this is the example of realized niche.
2.Using one or two sentences, compare and contrast resource partitioning and the competitive exclusion principle.
Resource partitioning: is the process in which similar species live on the limited resources in an ecological area without leading other species to extinction.
Competitive exclusion principle: It is also known as Gause’s Law which state that the two similar competitive species competing for the same resources can’t coexist at constant population values.
3. Describe in one sentence the concept of symbiosis, and define in two sentences the concepts of parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism using a pair of organisms to exemplify each.
Symbiosis is the interaction between two different organisms in which both organisms get mutually benefitted.
Parasitism: is the interaction between two different organisms in which one organism is only getting the benefit and another get harm due too firsts presence. Example: parasitic worms that live in and cause disease in humans.
Commensalism: is the interaction between two different organisms in which one organism is getting the benefit and another neither get harmed nor get benefitted. Example: sea anemones and clownfish.
Mutualism: is the interaction between two different organisms either belongs from same or different societies in which both organisms get benefitted. Example: digestive bacteria and humans.
4.In two sentences, list the key characteristics of a predator and a prey using an example of an animal that exemplifies each. Describe in a short paragraph why a predator and prey can exhibit a cyclical relationship in terms of population oscillations.
Predator: are those animals which kill the small animals for their food. The predator has an excellent scene to find the prey and their body is strong and having strong claws or teeth to capture prey. Lizards are the predator of insects.
Prey: is the weak animals which are being eaten by the predator. They are dumb and have less sensitive sense organs as compared to the predator. Insects are prey for lizards.
Describe in a short paragraph why a predator and prey can exhibit a cyclical relationship in terms of population oscillations.
The predator and prey have always a cyclic relationship because they maintain each other’s population size which ultimately helps to maintain the ecosystem balance.
