Massacre of Boston, (March 5 , 1770), a skirmish in Boston , Massachusetts between British forces and a mob. Widely advertised, it led in the years preceding the American Revolution to the unpopularity of the British government in most of colonial North America.

In Boston, in early 1770, passions ran heavy. More than 2,000 British forces occupied 16,000 inhabitants in the region and sought to impose the tax laws of Britain, such as the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts. American colonists rebelled, gathering behind the cry, "no taxation without representation," against the taxes they found oppressive. There were increasingly frequent skirmishes between colonists and soldiers and between patriot colonists and colonists loyal to Britain (loyalists). Patriots also vandalised shops selling British merchandise and threatened store traders and their clients to protest against taxation.

A crowd of patriots assaulted a recognised loyalist 's shop on February 22. Living outside the shop, customs officer Ebenezer Richardson attempted to break up the rock-pelting crowd by shooting his rifle from his home's glass. His gunfire hit and killed Christopher Seider, an 11-year-old boy, and further angered the patriots. A battle broke out between local staff and British troops some days later. It ended without significant bloodshed, but it did set the tone for the forthcoming bloody event.

The Massacre of Boston had a significant influence on relations between Britain and the colonies of the United States. It further incensed settlers who were still tired of British rule and unjust taxes and inspired them to fight for freedom.
The colonists continued their uprising over the next five years and staged the Boston Tea Party, formed the First Continental Congress and guarded their arsenal of militia at Concord against the redcoats, effectively launching the American Revolution. Still, at the intersection of Congress Street and State Street, a few yards from where the first bullets were fired, the town of Boston has a Boston Massacre place marker.
