Relationship between Political Science and Economics
Remember that Economics is concerned with studying & influencing the economy. Politics is the theory of and practice of influencing people through the exercise of power. There is a strong relationship between the two because the performance of the economy is one of the key political battlegrounds. Many economic issues are inherently political.
A. How is state power maintained within a population?
State power is maintained within a population in the following ways:
1. States have power over their domain. They define citizenship and its rights and responsibilities.
2. States monopolise the use of force and the maintainance of law and order , courts, and police. States maintain standing armies and the police force.
3. States keep track of citizens in terms of number, age, gender, location and wealth through census systems.
4. States extract resources through taxes and also have the ability to manipulate information.
5. States control population in many ways. They regulate marriage & adoption, create administrative divisions that help create loyalty and help to administer social services.
6. They may foster geographic mobility and resettement (migration) that breaks down the power of familial relationships.
7. States often use religious beliefs and symbols to maintain their power within a population. They also use race, ethnicity or nationalistic ideas for the same.
Social control is of key concern to the state leadership and is maintained through the formal methods mentioned above (and many more) and informal methods such as psychological manipulation.
B. How does ethnicity and nationalism influence the ways in which cultural groups recognized their inclusion or exclusion within a nation-state?
