Hi,

We will take the example of balancing cut and fill in selection of grade line.

Please go through the images attached below to understand better.

• Image 1 is the original L-Section of a 1 km road at each 100 m
• Image 2 is the section in which we had kept a total rise of 10 cm in grade line. In this option an additional of 270 m³ soil to be borrowed from outside.

• Image 3 is the section in which we had kept a total rise of 5 cm in grade line. In this option a surplus quantity of 480 m³ soil need to be disposed off from work site.
• Image 4 is that we have calculated the most economical section with the available materials at site. If we keep a rise of 8.2 cm in the given example, the cut and fill quantity will be same.

If the cut and fill quantities are same, means neither we need to purchase any materials from outside, nor we need to dispose off any materials which costs extra.

Hence it will be the most economical section in view of cut and fill quantities.
