Use the first six digits of your phone number (x) and the first
six digits of your student number (y) to form six pairs of data
(x,y).
a) Excel Obtain a scatter plot of the data. Print this plot. b)
Excel Obtain and interpret the linear correlation coefficient. c)
Would you proceed to analyze this data using the method of least
squares regression? Explain why or why not.
phone number digits:- 289775
student number digits:- 642045
a) Excel Obtain a scatter plot of the data. Print this plot.
The required scatter plot of the data by using excel is given as below:
From above scatter plot, it is observed that there is a negative linear relationship exists between the given two variables x and y.
b) Excel Obtain and interpret the linear correlation coefficient.
The linear correlation coefficient for the given data by using excel is given as below:
x |
y |
|
x |
1 |
|
y |
-0.663338607 |
1 |
The linear correlation coefficient is given as -0.6633, this means there is a considerable negative linear relationship or association exists between the given two variables x and y.
c) Would you proceed to analyze this data using the method of least squares regression? Explain why or why not.
We would not proceed to analyze this using the method of least squares regression, because we do not get the strong linear association or correlation coefficient between given two variables and sample size is also very small (n = 6). So, least square regression line would not be statistically significant for this data.
