In the ongoing “College Admissions Scandal Case”, the defendants have faced a number of criminal charges, including RICO allegations, Fraud, Bribery and others.
Discuss these three crimes and why the defendant(s) have been so charged.
College Admissions Scandal Case, crimes charged:
1. Bribery refers to illegally securing something (goods or service or opportunity) by paying a compensation for the same. This is a crime under law. In the given case, it was alleged that some parents paid an admission consultant who in turn bribed sports faculties at schools to admit students based on sports programs without having any proven athletic ability. The ACT and SAT test conductors were also charged of accepting bribery from the admssion consultant to check students's papers unfairly.
2. RICO allegations (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) refers to an US law that facilitates extended criminial penalties on criminals who are charged of proceedings going on currently. In the given case, the admission consultant, Singer, was charged with racketeering charges because he not only committed the crime but also ordered the same.
3. Fraud refers to achieving some goals by unfair means, by duping others. The accused has been charged with fraud along with the parents for making a mockery of the education system and administration and using unfair means to secure admission for students.
