What does the term "horizontal gene transfer" mean?

What does the term "horizontal gene transfer" mean?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Horizontal gene transfer is transfer of genetic material from one species to another for e.g. gene transfer from virus to human or from bacteria (unicellular) to plant (multicellular).

This is unlike vertical gene transfer where transfer of genetic material is from parent to offspring.
