STATISTICS IN PRACTICE:
This is a group assignment that seeks to reveal students
understanding of statistics in general and it’s practical
usefulness. The following are the guidelines;
1. Each group has to identify a
natural process or activity and gather data about/from the
process.
2. Data gathered can be in real
time or historical. You can pick the data from government websites
(e.g. Ghana statistical service) or company websites (sales data
etc.)
3. Sample size of collected data
should not be less than fifty (50).
4. Construct a grouped frequency
distribution for the data gathered.
5. Present your data using any
three of the graphical representation methods you have
studied.
6. Evaluate any three measures
of central tendency for the data. What is the meaning of these
values.
7. Evaluate any three measures
of dispersion for the data. What is the meaning of these
values.
8. Summarize the characteristics
of the data and discuss your results.
9. Groups are to present their
work in Microsoft word by the submission date. The written report
should bear the center name name, student name and index number of
every member in the group.
10. The written report should start with an introduction
of the organisation and/or process chosen and then continue with
the presentation of raw collected data, organizing and
classification of the data, presentation of data (using descriptive
statistics), analysis, interpretation and discussion of
results.
11. Grading will be based on innovativeness, accuracy of
data collection, analysis and subsequent interpretations as well as
the ability of each group member to present with clarity of
thought. How the group as a whole is able to respond to questions
concerning the work presented will also be taken into
consideration.
