(Answer) According to Saint Thomas Aquinas, the 5 things proper to friendship are:

  1. Selflessness - True friendship is based on selfless love for a person. Selfless love is the "constant, effective desire to do good to another."
  2. The inclusion of God - God's part of this friendship is unique in that, he is the creator of everything, including love. "The creation of His Love within us is called the habit of charity."
  3. Charity - What is natural to God is generally second-nature to us through habit. This habit enables us to make acts with ever-growing perfection, ease and joy. "As a good habit, charity is a virtue."
  4. The goal - It is a distinct virtue from the moral virtues in that God is its object. "Charity seeks only God and loves Him for Himself."
  5. The inception of love - "Because of this love of ourselves through God - as belonging to God and as His friend - it is possible to give all our neighbours the same supernatural love."

Most of the rules of Aquinas are based on the purging of selfishness from a friendship. In other words, a true friendship should not seek any gain other than love itself. Acts of morality and charity that Aquinas has included in this outline are things that enforce these feelings of selflessness. Therefore, it is not only essential that one should not be selfish or stagnant, but rather take a step forward in being selfless.

I would reckon that his outline is inclusive of all things essential in a friendship. This is because; selflessness would eventually give rise to respect, understanding and compassion. This would make selflessness an expression of love itself.
