A musician is tuning the pitch of a violin using a sound fork at 3,000 Hz. He first hears the combined sound intensity rise and fall with a time of 0.25 s between the maximum intensity and the succeeding minimum intensity. As he tightens the string, the time between the intensity maximums becomes longer. What is the pitch of the violin string at first?

Solutions

Expert Solution

time etween maxima to minima = 0.25 secs

time from maxima to maxima = 0.5 secs

so this is the beat freqency.= 1/t= 1/0.5= 2 hz

now , we know that beat frequency=

so , we will have,

2= |3000- f2|

now, as e he tightens the string, the time between the intensity maximums becomes longer.

which meansthe freqency of instrument incresed, so initially it must be on the lower side,

hence we have,

2= |3000- f2|

=> finitial = 3000-2 = 2998 Hz
