What does a polarized neuron mean?
Polarized neuron means that the cell membrane of a neuron is polarized. Being polarized means that the electrical charge on the outside of the membrane is positive while the electrical charge on the inside of the membrane is negative. This charge difference is produced by chemically driven pumps. These pumps push positive sodium ions (Na+) out of the cell, leaving behind negative ions, especially chloride ions (Cl-). The excess of negative ions left inside the cell makes it negative and the cell becomes polarized.
When a neuron is at rest, the inside of the neuron is negative relative to the outside. The resting membrane potential of a neuron is about -70 mV.
