Describe three ways to tell if a specific neurotransmitter is synthesized and stored in a particular neuron.
The three ways to say if a specific neurotransmitter is synthesized and stored in a particular neuron are-
a.Synaptic transmission
It is a biological process by which a neuron communicates with a target cell across a synapse. Chemical synaptic transmission involves the release of a neurotransmitter from the pre synaptic neuron and also includes the neurotransmitter binding to specific post -synaptic receptors.
b.Ligand binding methods-
Some neurotransmitter receptors can be ligand activated ion channel where the membrane spanning ion channel proteins open directly in response to ligand binding. Ligand activated ion channels are large protein complexes. There are some certain regions where binding sites are present for the neurotransmitters as well as membrane spanning segments that make up the channel.
c.Molecular analysis of receptor proteins
Some neurotransmiters are considered as excitatory making a target neuron more likely to fire an action potential. While, others are considered as inhibitory making a target neuron less likely to fire an action potential.
Hence, molecular analysis of receptor proteins are needed to say if some neurotransmitters are synthesized and stored in a particular neuron.
