a)A person who is unable to be aroused ,even by vigorous painful stimuli, is comatose.

Comatose :

  • Comatosed patients are in completely deep unconscious state
  • They cannot speak , move or do any voluntary actions
  • No response to even painful stimulus and they cannot be awakened

b)Persistent jerky movements of the eyes is known as nystagmus .

Nystagmus :

  • Persistent jerky movements of eye from side to side , up and down or in a circle.
  • It can be congenital or acquired(multiple sclerosis , trauma etc)

c)Decorticate posturing is demonstrated , in part , by abnormal flexion of the elbow.

Decorticate posturing :

  • Due to damage of one or both corticospinal tracts
  • Posture : Arms are adducted and elbows are flexed , with wrist and fingers flexed on the chest. Legs are extended and internally rotated with plantar flexion of the feet.

d)Decerebrate posturing is demonstrated , in part , by abnormal extension of the elbow.

Decerebrate rigidity :

  • Due to damage of the upper brainstem
  • Posture : Arms are adducted and elbows are extended , with the wrists pronated and fingers flexed. Legs are extended with the plantar flexion of the feet

e)Cognitive impairment is associated with short term memory loss

Cognitive impairment :

  • Short term or long term memory loss
  • Difficulty in decision making
  • Confusion and difficulty in concentration

f)Increased intracranial pressure can cause fixed , dilated pupils.

Increased intracranial pressure symptoms :

  • Vomitings and headache
  • Pupils fixed dilated and not responding to light and blurring of vision
