When comparing replication and transcription, pick the best answer that describes this property:
the process ends when the polymerizing complex synthesizes a region that contains a stem-loop region
A. | replication only | |
B. | transcription only | |
C. | neither | |
D. | both |
Ans: The process that ends when the polymerizing complex synthesizes a region that contains a stem loop region is Transcription only - option B.
During transcription, at termination stage, there are two ways by which termination can occur - one is Rho dependent termination and other is rho independent termination.
In rho independent termination, At the 3' end of the transcript, there is an internal complementary sequence is present that forms hairpin stem loop like structure which helps in termination. Hence, in this way this structure helps in transcription termination.
This kind of structures are not formed in replication because during replication, DNA has to be present in linear fashion for proper replication to occur and as soon as the new DNA is synthesised, it forms hydrogen bond with the template DNA and no chances of stem loop like structure has formed.
