“Investigators wishes to know if eating dark chocolate is associated with better cholesterol level in the blood among middle -aged people 45-65 years)”

  1. ‘Propose an epidemiological study design to explore this question and justify why you chose this design? ‘[4 Marks]
  1. ‘Assuming you are one of the investigators – please provide a short description about the participants in the study, what data you will need to collect to answer your research question and at which time point you collect this data’   [4 Marks]

  1. What other study design you can consider for this research question and explain why you chose it [4 Marks]

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. Experimental study design would be a better choice.

Problem statement would be " A true experimental study to assess the effectiveness of dark chocolates on reduceing blood cholestrol levels among people aged between 45-65 years.

True experimental studies have greater value in order to find the effectiveness of a particular intervention on a clinical parameter. It is the most trusted and strong research deisgn. Randamization, control and manipulation could be applied.Experimental and control group will be at same setting.

Participants details

  • Participants would be aged 45 to 65 years
  • willing to participate in the study
  • having a blood cholestrol level higher than normal

Data required to start study

  • past medical history
  • blood laboratory investigations of lipid profile
  • medications used by the patient

Time to start the study after these requirements are met

  • Determination of sample size
  • Institutional review board agreement
  • tool validation
  • proposal presentation

Other study designs would be quasi experimental design in which control and manipulation could be applied. Here, the study will not use randomization. Experimental and control group will be at different settings.

1a Scientists have speculated that eating a moderate amount of dark chocolate may increase the level of antioxidants, compounds that protect us against free radicals, which can cause heart disease and cancer. Levels of antioxidants in the bloodstream have been shown to increase significantly after consumption of dark chocolate. A study was designed, and the antioxidant concentration in patients who ate dark chocolate regularly was measured to test if there is evidence to suggest that the mean percentage of antioxidants...

A dietitian wishes to see if a person’s cholesterol level will change if their diet is supplemented by a certain mineral. Six randomly selected subjects had their cholesterol level measured before and then took the mineral supplement for 5 weeks. The same six subjects had their cholesterol level measured again after the 5-week supplement. The results are shown below.  Assume the two population distributions are normal and the subjects were selected independently. Can it be concluded that the cholesterol level has...

Suppose that the mean cholesterol level for males aged 50 is 241. An investigator wishes to examine whether cholesterol levels are significantly reduced by modifying diet only slightly. A sample of 12 patients agrees to participate in the study and follow the modified diet for 3 months. After 3 months, their cholesterol levels are measured and the summary statistics are produced on the n = 12 subjects. The mean cholesterol level in the sample is 235 with a standard deviation...
