People all over the world looked at the United States as the land of opportunity and hope for a better future. They were pushed for various reasons from their home lands and pulled to the unknown that awaited them on the shores of America.After reading the New Colossus (1883), by Emma Lazarus, and the experiences of the Saranoff family and Adam Laboda, compare the similarities and differences in ideas and experiences of immigrants coming to the United States. The United States faced this immigration problem from the first part of the 19th century.The integration of immigrants with the Americans gave a colourful culture .The immigrants came to America in search of economic opportunity.The US is a nation of immigrants.Americans have given opportunities to the immigrants and they have become Americans fully.The immigrants served in American military, fostered technological innovations,worked as farmers and did everything to enrich the economy.The immigrants are better off because they get education and education improves well being.However integration does not always promote well being . There are three outcomes where well being declines as immigrants converge with native born Americans-on health , crime and on the number of children growing up with two parents.Highly educated and skilled immigrants coming to US contribute to US scientific and technical workforce.Other immigrants have low levels of education . These immigrants do not have parity with native Americans.Crime rates for the second and third generation of immigrants is high.Health care opportunities for undocumented immigrants are not there.They are excluded from coverage of Affordable health care.Immigrants are poor than native born Americans.
