You are about to care for Tanika, a full-term neonate (weight=3500g) who underwent surgery 24 hours ago for fundoplication and placement of gastronomy tube. The nurse reports that Tanika has slept for short periods throughout the shift, sucks vigorously on the pacifier, and occasionally cries. The nurse notes that she has not medicated Tanika for pain because she does have periods when she sleeps for 15 to 30 minutes. Her BP is 98/74, pulse rate 170, and respiratory rate 50.

Gastrostomy is the condition in which an artificial external opening of the stomach is penetrated for nutritional support.
