What types of atomic bonding are present in gas hydrates? Explain your answer. (Hint: Think carefully about all types of bonding that may be present. Not just the most obvious.)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Gas hydrate is also known as clathrate hydrate. In this solid water in frozen state acts as ‘host’ molecules and form a cage which can hold a ‘guest’ gas molecule

The typical 3D view are given below

The cage is held together by the hydrogen bonds force of attraction which exists between water molecules and stabilized by van der Waals forces. Van der Waals forces are basically the forces which acts between the gas and water molecules.
