In general terms, the change from a centrally planned economy to a more market-basedeconomy has affected career options and standards of living for the elderly, for young professionals, for unskilled laborers, for members of the military, for women, and for former government bureaucrats. Centrally planned or socialist economy is an economic system in which the state owns all land and means of production, while government officials direct all economic activity, including the location of factories, residences, and transportation infrastructure.
