Explain the two main types of scaling. Discuss any two types of comparative scaling techniques with examples.
Comparative and non-comapraitive scaling are scaling techniques which are used in research. In comparative scale, two item are directly compared with each other, these scale are in rank order or ordinal scale. For Ex. We could ask if a person likes to stay at home or go outside and travel. Non comparative scaling involves evaluation of only one particular item and independent of all the other items. For Ex. Asking people about their experiences of being in a stressful situation.
Comparative Scaling types:
Rank order comparison- The subject is given various items and has to rank them in a specified order. For Example -Ten fear items related to fear of heights are given to the person, and he has to rate it from most to least fearful.
Constant sum scaling- In this, certain number of points are allocated to some categories or areas. For Example - In a career aptitude test, various areas such as mechanical, clerical aptitude are presented with and for each the person has to allot points from a total given number of points
