Nursing is defined by caring. At Redlands Community Hospital, nursing has embraced the theory of Jean Watson’s Caring Science. Caring Science helps us to embrace the positive energy that flows from an integrated mind, body and spirit and is mutually rewarding to both the patient and the nurse. Forged by the vision of Florence Nightingale who asserted that the “role of a nurse is to put her patient in the best position to be able to self-heal”, nurses are optimally positioned to be the heart of healing. By actively engaging in caring through authentic presence and intentionality, the nurse is able to optimize her patient’s ability to heal from within.

JEAN WATSON

Dr. Jean Watson is a nurse theorist who developed “Philosphy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring” or “Caring Science” and founder of Watson Caring Science Institute.Jean Watson (June 10, 1940 – present) is an American nurse theorist and nursing professor who is well known for her “Philosophy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring.” She has also written numerous texts, including Nursing: The Philosophy and Science of Caring. Watson’s study on caring has been integrated into education and patient care to various nursing schools and healthcare facilities all over the world.

THEORY OF JEAN WATSON

Jean Watson contends that caring regenerates life energies and potentiates our capabilities. ... The benefits are immeasurable and promote self-actualization on both a personal and professional level.Watson believed that holistic health care is central to the practice of caring in nursing. She defines nursing as “a human science of persons and human health-illness experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, esthetic and ethical human transactions.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), known as “The Lady With the Lamp,” was a British nurse, social reformer and statistician best known as the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy to Frances Nightingale and William Shore Nightingale.

THEORY OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE

Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory defined Nursing as “the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him in his recovery.”

• Nightingale's documents contain her philosophical assumptions and beliefs regarding all elements found in the metaparadigm of nursing. These can be formed into a conceptual model that has great utility in the practice setting and offers a framework for research conceptualization. (Selanders LC, 2010)

Nursing

• Nursing is different from medicine and the goal of nursing is to place the patient in the best possible condition for nature to act.
• Nursing is the "activities that promote health (as outlined in canons) which occur in any caregiving situation. They can be done by anyone."

• People are multidimensional, composed of biological, psychological, social and spiritual components.

Health

• Health is “not only to be well, but to be able to use well every power we have”.
• Disease is considered as dys-ease or the absence of comfort.

Environment

• "Poor or difficult environments led to poor health and disease".
• "Environment could be altered to improve conditions so that the natural laws would allow healing to occur."
