A potential client wants you to be the project manager for a project that involves moving to a new computerized human resource management system that supports the firm’s staffing, compensation, employee relations, and benefit functions. The client is very vague about what needs to be done, and all that they know is that they do not like the current system. Identify the types of questions that you could ask the client to gain a better understanding of the scope of the project. Other than having the client answer your questions, what other activities could you engage in to gain a better understanding

Following questions could help you determine the firm's requirement better:

  1. What are the drawbacks of the current system?
  2. What do you wish to achieve, I.e. quantitative and qualitative requirements?
  3. What is your budget for improvement and implementation of the new system?
  4. Company structure and individual job profiles.
  5. What values are upheld by the company?
  6. How does it plan to enhance employee productivity?
  7. What are the processes and lacunae?

In order to gain better understanding about the requirement, I could discuss with each employee of the firm. Starting from higher level managers to lower level managers, to executives and workers. Thus, I would realize the priority of improvement from everyone's perspective and estimate the change required. In addition to this, I would conduct feedback surveys and group discussions.
