When issued a sample of homogenized mixture of sugar and salt, determine the %- composition of the mixture by means of conductivity measurements.

Describe all necessary steps and pertinent details of the work to be done, including explanation of how obtained data must be analyzed, to determine %-composition of a sucrose/NaCl (sugar/salt) mixture.

Solutions

Expert Solution

sugar when dissolved in water does not conducte electricity. NaCl ionizes in water. So the resultant conductivity of a mixture of sugar and sodium chloride is mainly due to conductiy of NaCl.

So a calibration chart has to be prepared for conductvity Vs mixed amount of sugar and NaCl. To ensure that the infleucence of sugar does not affect conductivity, separate calibartion chart has to be prepared by weighing different amount of NaCl and determination of its conductivity.

There are two calibration charts. 1. known weights of sugar and salt vs conductivity 2. known weight of Salt and its conducivity.

For determining the percentage of unkown sugat and salt mixtute, first find out the conductivity of the mixtute using the 2nd calibration chart of amount of NaCl Vs conducivity. This will give the amount of NaCl in the sample. This can be cross checked by the 1 st calibration chart of known weights of sugar and salt vs conductivity. Once, the amount of salt is known, the amount of sugar in the solution can be calculated as

amount of sugar = volume of solution * density of the solution - mass of NaCl ( obtained from the calibration charts

% sugar= mass of sugar/ total mass of the soltion
