Ainsworth conducted a study using strange situation test to know more about the type of attachment patterns, infants develops with their caregivers. The infants were observed in various conditions, in presence of only caregiver, in presence of stranger with or without caregiver and in situations when caregiver returns after some time. He found the following attachment types - secure, insecure-avoidant and insecure-ambivalent.
