An academic instructional design aids in the development of learning projects mainly e learning projects. An instructional model consists of the following components: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation.
First step is analysis in which the need for developing the instructional design should be identified. This helps to understand the expectation of the organization and also the target learners. This is the foundation that drives a design and also the developmental process.
Design: In the designing phase the instructional strategies needs to be selected. The learning objectives needs to be identified and listed. The Instructional designer must choose the most appropriate media (audio, video, graphics) of instruction and delivery methods based on the target audience .This phase also includes gathering the content, lesson planning, exercise and plan for assessment using different tools for evaluation. A systematic approach in the designing phase following a specific set of rules helps to ensure that every single step has a rationale and this avoids wastage of time and energy. The time frame for each task ( lesson or module) must be set. Decide on and design the user interface as well as proper feed back mechanism, if the project is web based.
Development: In this stage testing the effectiveness of designed tools takes place. Drafting, production and evaluation are the three main tasks in the development phase. Based on the results of analysis and design a program that exhibits what needs to be taught to the audience or participants is developed.
Implementation: Redesigning, updating and editing of the program occurs in the implementation phase. In this stage the developed program will be continuously modified in order to ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiency to obtain positive results. The course designer as well as the students works hand in hand to test the newly developed tool. Feed back from both sides helps to identify and address the deficits identified.
Evaluation: This is the last stage in which the final testing of the entire project happens. The goal is to identify if the objectives are achieved and the improvisations that are needed for better performance of the project. This can be conducted in two phases: formative evaluation and summative evaluation. The first stage of evaluation occurs at the development phase itself. Then in the implementation phase formative evaluation takes place, when the study is been conducted. Summative evaluation is done at last.in which the pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages as well as strengths and weaknesses of a project are identified.
