5. A patient is receiving 15 mL/hour using a 20 drop set. How many drops per minute will be administered?
6. A medication is set to flow at 35 mL/hour using a mini-drip set. How many drops per minute will be administered?
7. An order for 500 mg of a drug mixed in a 100 mL bag is set to flow over 30 minutes. Using a 30 drop set, how many drops per minute will be administered?
8. How many liters will be delivered over 24 hours if the flow rate is 17 gtt/min using a 20 drop set?
9. How long will a 2 L bag last if the patient receives 40 gtt/min using a 20 drop set?
Determine the infusion rates in drops per minute for the following orders.
10. Give 210 mL over 45 minutes using a 10 drop set.
5) Drops per min(gtt/min).
gtt/min = Volume(ml)/Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Here
Volume(ml) = 15 ml.
Time(min) = 60 min (1hr).
Drop factor(gtt/ml) = 20 gtt/ml.
As per above formula
gtt/min = 15/60 * 20
= 0.25 * 20
= 5 gtt/min.
6) Calculation of drops per min(gtt/min).
gtt/min = Volume(ml)/Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Here
Volume(ml) = 35 ml.
Time(min) = 60 min ( 1hr).
Drop factor(gtt/ml) = 60 gtt/ml (mini drip set drop factor is 60).
As per above formula
gtt/min = 35/60 * 60
= 0.58 * 60
= 34.8 gtt/min.
7) Calculation of drops per min(gtt/min).
gtt/min = Volume(ml)/Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Here
Volume(ml) = 100 ml.
Time(min) = 30 min.
Drop factor = 30 gtt/ml.
As per above formula
gtt/min = 100/30 * 30
= 3.33 * 30
= 100 gtt/min.
8) Calculation of volume in liter.
gtt/min = Volume(ml) / Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Volume(ml) = gtt/min * Time(min) / Drop factor (gtt/ml).
Here
gtt/min = 17 gtt/min.
Time(min) = 1440 min ( 24 hr * 60 min).
Drop factor(gtt/ml) = 20 gtt/ml.
As per above formula
Volume(ml) = 17 * 1440 / 20
= 24480 / 20
= 1224 ml.
1 ml = 0.001 l.
So
Volume (L) = 1224 * 0.001
= 1.2 L.
9) Calculation of time(min).
gtt/min = Volume(ml)/Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
So
Time(min) = Volume(ml) / gtt/min * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Here
Volume(ml) = 2000 ml ( 2L).
gtt/min = 40 gtt/min.
Drop factor = 20 gtt/ml.
As per above formula
Time(min) = 2000/40 * 20
= 50 * 20
= 1000 min.
10) Calculation of flow rate(gtt/min).
gtt/min = Volume(ml)/Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).
Here
Volume(ml) = 210 ml.
Time(min) = 45 min.
Drop factor(gtt/ml) = 10 gtt/ml.
As per above formula
gtt/min = 210/45 * 10
= 4.67 * 10
= 46.7 gtt/min.
