Cultural competence is defined as the ability of health care providers and organizations to provide health care services that can meet the social, cultural, and linguistic requirements of patients.
Cultural competency in nursing practice is very important as it involves superior care for people of all cultures. It is very important in our daily lives but even more for nurses who regularly care for patients in their most vulnerable state.
An example for positive experience regarding cultural competency in nursing include,
Comforting patients during their critical time.
When a patient enters medical care, they may be suffering high stress because of pain, nerves, fear, and worry. If they are accompanied by family members, the stress is intense as these emotions are compounded. It’s easy to understand the importance of cultural competence in nursing as it allows her to comfort those patients with different beliefs and gives an opportunity to provide care at the highest level.
