Assignment instructions: In this assignment, you will first have to go “out” and do something before you can write it up. Read here what you need to do: - Break a social norm (Caution: do not wear anything illegal, dangerous, or extremely disruptive.) For example: Wear formal attire to a casual get together. Wear a winter jacket in the summer. Wear sandals in the snow. Wear your pajamas outside. Wear an unstylish or outdated outfit. (What is a social norm? Read page 55 of your textbook!) - Next, interact with others and observe their responses while wearing your normbreaking outfit. You could for example wear these clothes around the university or go outside on the street or to the mall. - Write a report of your experiences (find the instructions of how to write the report on the other side of this page). ● Introduction to Sociology ● Fall 2016-2017 ● How to write your report for the: “Breaking a social norm” - assignment Your report should be 600-800 words. Be sure to cover all of these points, but don’t feel that you are limited to them. Elaborate and be creative where you can. Add as much as you can from your learning about sociology in everyday settings. 1. Statement of the Problem A. Which social norm will you break? B. Describe what you will do to break this social norm. 2. Hypothesis A. How do you expect people will respond to what you will do? What kind of things do you think could happen? 3. Describe the setting A. Where did you break the social norm? Describe the place. B. How many and what type of people (approximately) were there in that place? 4. Describe the incident A. Explain what happened when you broke the social norm. 5. Interpretation A. How did you feel while you were breaking the norm? B. Why did you feel the way you did? C. Social norms are informal understandings that govern the behaviour of members of the society.Role of norms are emphasized to guide behaviour in a certain accepted way in a society.Norms have two dimensins,one how the behaviour is exhibited and how the behaviour is approved in a group.social norms are unwritten rules how to behave .The breaking of social norms can either be by deviant behaviour ,breaking the law or not being appropriate in a particular situation or group.There are norms defining appropriate behaviour for every group.There is considerable pressure to maintain these social norms.

Everyday is filled with human beings interactions,from the time we wake up ,we interact with individuals,counter experiences,The fact that we have an everyday life in which there are patterns and streams of life sets a foundation to understand ourselves better.

The incident were i broke the social norm

As i was driving in high speed to get to the hospital i crossed the red light at the signal and push down the barrier which was on the road. I was chased by the police and yet did not stop as it was an emergency. I was forced to stop.The penalty was high as i broke the law,people gathered to support but in vain.I tried reasoning out with police but i could not prove my action as legitamite. My action as i felt was reasonable as i had a purpose to break the rule at that situation.
