the nurse is starting a norepinephrine infusion at 0.03 mcg/kg/minute. pharmacy supplies the medication as norepinephrine 8 mg/350 ml 0.9 % sodium chloride. what rate in ml/he will the nurse program the infusion pump? round to the nearest 10 th decimal place
Initial infusion rate = 0.03 mcg/kg/minute
Since, 1hour = 60 min therefore infusion rate in hour becomes 0.03mcg/kg/min x 60 min = 1.8mcg/kg/hr
Available concentration of drug = 8mg/350mL = 8000mcg/350mL (1mg = 1000mcg) = 22.85mcg/mL (normal simplification)
Now if 1mL of solution contains 22.85mcg of norepinephrine, then volume of solution for 1.8mcg = 1.8mcg / 22.85mcg = 0.078mL or 0.08mL
Hence the nurse will program the infusion pump at 0.08mL/kg/hr.
