C.J continues to have recurrent urinary tract infections and the physician orders nitrofurantoin daily for 90 days.

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic prescribed in cases of bladder infection. Urinary tract infections (UTI) could be due to infection in kidneys, bladder, urethra, or ureters. In the patient, the UTI is recurrent indicating the chronic UTI. Nitrofuratoin is ineffective for the kidney infections. Hence, in case, UTI is recurring due to infection in the kidney, it will not be treated by Nitrofurantoin. Assessment of urine samples and patient history of medicines and its effect is decisive for further treatment as it enables the correct medication and treatment of the patient.

The side effects of nitrofurantoin include vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, numbness or pain in feet and hands, weakness, and diarrhea.
