A prescription was written for the following: Rx: AUGMENTIN 400mg/5mL Sig: ii tsp p.o. t.i.d. q8h x 7 days. ( a.) Calculate the daily dose in mg/kg/day if the patient weighs 154 lbs (round to 1 decimal place). (b). If AUGMENTIN is available as 75 mL, 150 mL, and 250 mL containers, which one should be dispensed for this patient to complete the therapy?
You receive the following hospital medication order: Rx: procarbazine (MATULANE) oral capsule 100mg/m2 /day. (a) If the patient is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 242 lbs, what is their BSA (round to 2 decimal places)? ( b.) How many 50mg capsules need to be administered daily (round to the nearest whole number)?
1. a) The prescribed dose was 2 tsp orally 3 times a day every 8 hours for 7 days.
So, in 1 day, the patient is consuming 6 tsps of the medicine or 5×6=30ml.
Now, the patient weighs 154lbs or 69.8 or 70Kgs approx.
The patient is taking 6tsps of medicine per day or 400×6= 2400mg per day (as 1tsp=5ml)
So the dose will be= 2400/70= 34.3mg/Kg/day.
b) The patient consumes 6 tsps or 30 ml of medicine per day.
So, for 1 week or 7 days 30×7=210ml of medicine is required.
So, 250ml container should be dispensed for this patient to complete the therapy.
2. a)Calculation of BSA or Body Surface Area by DuBois-DuBois formula-
(H in cm)^0.725 ×(W in Kg)^0.425 × 0.007184 m^2
= (187.96cm)^0.725 × (109.8Kg)^0.425 ×0.007184
BSA= 2.36m^2 Or 2.36 sq.m
b) Prescribed 100mg/m2/day
So for 1m^2 100 mg is needed per day.
For 2.36 m^2 =100×2.36=236mg medicine needed.
So, 236/50 =4.72 or rounded off to 5
So, 5 capsules of 50mg needed to be administered daily to the patient.
