At a company picnic held at an out-of-town park, a co-worker’s child falls off the monkey bars. Based on the bruising and slight change in shape of her forearm, you suspect a fracture. The parents give permission for you to give first aid care, but they insist on transporting her to advanced care themselves. You search for materials in your environment to use for splinting her injury.

What material could you use to splint the child's arm?

What parts of the arm must be immobilized?

Describe how you would apply the splint.

Solutions

Expert Solution

As at the picnic spot , we can create a temporary splint from the matieral arounds us that ease the pain of an injury and by making sure that the wounded area doesn't move ..The first thing we 'll need when making a splint is something rigid to stabilize the fracture . The items include that we can use are ;-

A rolled up newspaper

A heavy stick

A board or plank

A rolled up towel or cloth

If we 're using the something with sharp edges or something that might cause splinters , suchas a stick or board , we have to be sure to pad it well by wrapping it in cloth . proper padding can also help reduce additional pressure on the injury .

we 'll also need something to fasten the handmade splint in place . Shoelaces , belts , ropes , and the strips of cloth will work , Medical tape can also we used if we have .

But try not to place commercial tape such as duct tape, directly against a person's skin.

We can follow the instruction below to learn the how we can apply a splint .

Attend to any bleeding

attend to bleeding if any , before we attempt to place the  splint ..We can stop the bleeding by putting pressure directly on the wound .

Apply padding

then apply a bandage a square of gauze or a piece of cloth. but don't try to mov e the body parts that need to be splinted. By trying to realign a mishappen body part or broken bone , we may accidently cause more damage.

Place the splint

carefully place the handmade splinting so that it rest on the joint above the injury and the joint below it .,Avoiding placing the ties directly over the injured area . we should fasten the  splint tightly enough to hold the body part still , but not so tightly that the ties will cut off the person's circulation .

Watch for signs of decreased blood circulation

Once the splinting is completed we should check the areas around it every few minutes for the sign of decreased blood circulation . If the extrimities begin to appear pale , swollen or tinged with blue , loosen the ties that are holding the splint .

Seek themedical help

After we 'he applied the splint and the injured body part is no longer able to move and go for the local emergency services .

SPLINTING THE HAND

as the hand is as especially difficult area to immobilize .here are some tips for making are ouw hand splint

Control any bleeding ;- first treat any open wound and control any bleeding

Place an object inthe palm of the hand ;- The place a wad of cloth in the palm of injured person's hand .A washcloth , a boll of socks or a tennis boll can work well . Then as k the person to close their fingers loosely around the objects .

Apply padding ;- After the person's fingers are closely around the  object , loosely palce padding between their fingers . Then nest use a large piece of cloth or gauze to wrap the hole hand from teh fingertip s to the wrist the cloth should go acros s the hand from the thumb to the pinkie .

Secure the padding ;- finnally secure the cloth with the tape or ties make sure to leave the fingerstips uncovered ,This will alow him to check for the signs of poor circulation .

Seek to the medical help ;- once the hand splint is on , seek to medical attention at an emergency department or urgent care center as soon as possible .
