The physician writes an order for Regular Insulin to be infused at 2.5 units per hour. Pharmacy supplies 100 units of Regular Insulin in 500 mL of normal saline. The infusion control device used in your unit can be set in mL/hr. What should the infusion rate be?
500 ml = 100 unit
1 unit = 5 ml
2.5 unit = 12.5 ml
Ml per hour = total volume of infusion × drop factor / time in
minutes
12.5× 20/ 60
= 4.16 drops per minute
That's 4 drop per minute
