Wave forms and Wave Energy
Kinetic energy is often the release of potential energy is a sudden burst. Waves are repeated occurrences of an event that may or may not follow a set pattern. Sometimes this burst can be controlled, and sometimes it is so large, new language was created to compare it to other energy releases. There are also situations where the terminology could is used interchangeably with another term or phrase. And to confuse the issue more, there are phrases here that are commonly used incorrectly.
For this assignment, defining and understanding how the term is
used is the goal. Please define the following term
State if it can be practically measured.
If it can be measured, what scalar unit is used.
Finally write a phrase that demonstrates a context you would use this term.
1. Amplitude
2. Waveform
3. Overtone
4. Magnitude
5. Hertz
6. Phase shifting
7. Seismic
8. Decibel
9. Elastic
10.White noise
11.Radar
12.Sonar
13.Ultrasound
14.Frequencies
15.Wavelength
16.We've got the cumulonimbus and a possible gale We've got a force nine blowing on the Beaufort scale
What is the Beaufort scale and what is the turbulence it measures?
1. Ampltude: The maximum displacement of a point on a wave from its equilibrium position. Yes it can be measured. It is measured in units of length i.e. meter(m). Phrase: Amplitude of sound wave
2. Waveform: It represents the shape\graph of any variable quantity against time.No waveform cannot be measured bu can be represented by various functions like sine function. Phrase: waveform of the sinewave
3.Overtone: Any frequency greater than the fundamental frequency of a wave is called its overtone. Overtones can be measured only in the form of their frequencies which has the units as hertz(Hz). Phrase: Play the third overtone
4. Magnitude: represents the Extent or size of the object in discussion. Yes it can be measur ed and uses the same units as the quantity in discussion. Phrase: Magnitude of sound
5. Hertz: It is the SI unit of frequency. Yes it is measurable. Phrase: frequensy is 200Hz
6. Phase shifting: the amount by which a wave has shifted from its original form. Yes it is measured in degrees. Phrase: Maximum Phase shift is 360 degree.
7. Seismic: Refers to vibrations related to geological activities like earthquakes. Phrase: Seismic activity
8. Decibel: its a logarthmic unit used to represent ratio of two quantities. It itself is a unit f measurement. Phrase: Decibels of sound
9. Elastic: Ability of a substance to retrive its original shape. no its not measurable. Phrase: Rubber is elastic
10.White noise: Noise containing a number of frequencies of equal intesities. No its not measurable. Phrase: White noice in a signal
11.Radar: A device which measure variuos attribues of an object like distnce, Speed etc by using radio waves. No its not measurable. Phrase: Radars for speed detection
12.Sonar: A device used for detecting objects under water by sending an recieving reflected sound waves. No its not measurable. Phrase: Sonar used in navigation
13.Ultrasound: Sound waves of ultrasonic frequencies. Not measurable. Phrase: Ultrasound report in medicine
14.Frequencies: number of oscillations per unit time. Yes its measured in Hertz. Phrase: Frequency of sound waves.
15.Wavelength: Length of one complete wave. Yes its measure in Meter. Phrase: Colour is independent of wavelength.
16. Its a scale for measuring wind intensity based on observations of the sea conditions.
