Do you agree that population growth is a major global problem? Why or why not? (just pick a side for this one)
What contributes to population growth? What are some solutions? Explain and provide examples.
Deforestation and the depletion of habitat are one of the main threats to sustained population development. We do not understand the degree to which we will expect to lose biodiversity until the biological system fails, but many ecologists and other scientists have cautioned that we are nearing that point, including 58 of the science academies of the world. Adding to this is the increasing environmental toxification, with thousands of chemicals released by different industries without a clear scientific understanding of their long-term impact.
The lack of forest cover leads directly to climate change, as forests hold vast quantities of accumulated carbon that, as trees are burned, returns to the atmosphere. Human development, even at the low per capita greenhouse gas emission rates of the average citizen of a developed country, is pushing up emissions. The estimated increase to the world's population of 2.7 billion people from now until 2050 is the climate equivalent to adding two Unified States to the globe.
In the United States, approximately two-thirds of the country's population increase is driven by immigrants. There are economic groups who have advocated for continued population development, such as the building industry and others that wish to exploit cheap labour. Any U.S. newspaper publishes an essay by an economist or corporation official nearly every week calling for Americans to have more babies and to do everything in the world to support population development Two Presidential Commissions have called for an end to development. These opinions, however, have been ignored by special interests who think of short-term gains over the nation's welfare. If we really consider long-term, we need to look past the age of cheap oil and consider about the amount of individuals who can be maintained in the future at a respectable standard of life. As is evident in many areas of the world, including California, fresh water sources can be much more scarce than energy supplies.
