A 73-year-old male patient complains of progressive darkening and clouding across his entire left field of vision. The patient reports no pain or trauma, and the progression has taken place very gradually. He is diagnosed with a cataract in the left eye.

  1. What surgical procedure will be performed in this case?

  2. Describe how the microscope will be draped.

  3. Why is it extremely important that all personnel in this procedure wear powder-free gloves?

  4. What is the likely postoperative treatment plan for the patient?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) EVen though cataract occurred only on the left eye cataract procedure is performed on both eyes, else it will cause difference in vission as one eye there will be difference in vision.

B) DRAPING: lift the lense cover and fasten it to microscope. Pull the drape over the head and arm of the microscope as well as the eyepieces.

C) it is important as power from the gloves can cause corneal corruption.

D) Postoperative treatment :

  • First, eye patch and eye shield should be removed 2–3 hours after reaching home.
  • After a total of 6 hours of surgery, instil antibiotic drops every hour about 5 to 6 times in total and topical steroid drops every two hours for at least 3 times.
  • From the next day, the steroids will be for upto 6 times a day and then slowly should be tapered.
  • Wear the sterile eye patch given during discharge after surgery.
