Why is respecting autonomy so important to the future of healthcare?
Autonomy means the right or condition of self goverment. Autonomy is about a person's ability to act on his or her own values and interest. The word taken from Greek and means self legislation and self governance. In order to do things the autonomous person must have sence of self worth andself-respect. The principle of respect for autonomy is usually aasociated with allowing or enabling patient to make their own decisions about which health care interventions they will or will not receive.
Patient autonomy. The right of patient to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence the decision. Patient autonomy does allow for health care provider to make decision for the patient. It require physicians to respect patients autonomy by giving them the information needed to understand the risk and benefits of proposed intervention, as well as reasonable alternatives, so that they may make independent decisions.
